With so much inspiration out there and some great home stores on every corner, it can be difficult to know where to start. Sometimes the choice of colour schemes, textures and ‘so on trend‘ styles can make it all a little overwhelming. So this month we’re sharing some decorating advice from the interiors experts…

If you’re choosing a new colour scheme and are taking the plunge for a completely new look, there are three golden rules you should follow to ensure that your chosen look is balanced and on point.

1. The 70-20-10 rule

For a balanced colour scheme, keep 70% of the elements (say walls and floors) as one colour, then add 20% in a second colour (fabrics) and 10% in an accent (accessories).

2. The pattern rule

When mixing patterns, use large with medium, or medium with small. Never mix large with small. Pick prints that share a colour in common.

3. The painted box rule

The look of paint changes according to the time of day and the amount of light that is in a room. Paint the inside of a large  box with a tester to create a miniature ‘room’ and see how the colour changes within a 3D space.

And finally…

Always add a surprise. A focal point – whether it’s a feature wall, a stunning light or a piece of art – is the short cut to a ‘wow’ room.
